Remembering Ken Bradbury

Ken Bradbury

The IESA is deeply saddened by the passing of Ken Bradbury.  Ken has been the cornerstone of IESA Speech for over 40 years.  He served as a presenter at the IESA Annual Fall Speech workshops where his tales and presentations both inspired and guided all that were in attendance.  He was a great influence on both new and experienced coaches.  Ken served as judge representative at over a hundred contests. His presence at these contests was always met with handshakes and photo shoots worthy of any Hollywood movie star; but, it was the guidance he shared with the coaches, hosts, and participants that truly made him a "rock star".  Bradbury served as the chair of the Speech Advisory Committee where he crafted the development of new events and guided the continual upgrading of the contest experience.  A gifted playwright, he was the author of nearly every script used at contest annually.

Ken Bradbury

In September, Ken was the recipient of the inaugural IESA Lifetime Service Award.  The award has since been renamed to go forward as the Ken Bradbury Lifetime Service Award to recognize those individuals who impact and influence the Fine Arts community while inspiring the whimsy and faith that where characteristic of Ken.  A loyal advocate for the students, coaches, and the activity, the award will serve to honor his legacy.

IESA Speech is, and will continue to be, one of the finest programs offered because of Ken Bradbury.

"I always remember an epitaph which is in the cemetery at Tombstone, Arizona. It says: 'Here lies Jack Williams. He done his damnedest.' I think that is the greatest epitaph a man can have - when he gives everything that is in him to do the job he has before him. That is all you can ask of him and that is what I have tried to do."  ---Harry Truman

Thank you, Ken, for all that you have done.
